That you can weep at all
and movingly with me
about those lost days
lets me see how far
we've come back from them
though I still don't
understand how recovery
necessarily leads to
anything transcendent
penitent or proud
a wounded private
returned from the war
for his own soul with the beast
returned to tell the tale
shriven and brilliant
and still not safe.
