Three Years Valentine

I pray for people
who think they know
what poetry isn’t
capable of submitting to
given the appropriate past
to build a dream on
in the three years
from 1798 to 1801
John Keats and Giacomo Leopardi
shared the air Novalis breathed
just as Simonides had
the moral air of nine years old
as can happen on Second Avenue
or near the bridge which
of course is not only a bridge
the bridge of sighs
but too many consonants
mean the language
can’t be trusted
