have to be swept up every day
or they become impenetrable
on the nights when the old people
have to be kept locked up
or they wander away
under the dropped uterus moon
when the dead of the year assemble
and the cat gallops like a pony on the roof
do we have to turn off the lights
and eat our own candy in the dark
while the television flickers
or can we open the door to fear
