Poet’s Labor Day Valentine

Briefly dreamed note to ee
(Edward Estlin) cummings
at this late date in your departure
would you care to collaborate
with me as your channel
on some new celebratory work
let me know I’m on the line
you were our Manley Hopkins
who did not follow St. Ignatius
that papist but loved freely
and drank and suffered
and was not afraid to
appear silly to scholars
who know more but feel less
who first made me smile in a poem
our father of the avant-garde
thank you this most blest bard
