Golden Valentine

Aren’t flowers the true gold
Of the world having hammered
Mineral gold and gemstones
Into the casual gestures of the sun
They feed us and illuminate
The heart’s dark journey
From innocence to fruitfulness
Stopping here briefly
Beauty that always runs the risk
Of seeming trivial and defenseless
But won’t be gotten rid of
Everywhere we go flowers
Follow or precede us asking
What are you waiting for
