Anyone’s Valentine

Why poets want to make it
A competition when anyone
Can write a poem that’s good
That’s one of its distinctions
To appear on postcards or in Homer
Struggling to reach us
His poems are everywhere in pieces
To be picked up and recycled
Or taken to the homeless shelter
Or carted off to jail
Little lines of encouragement
At least you tried
In the midst of so much
Love and terror
