Converted Valentine

Spending our nights in paradise as we do
How come we come back wounded
Salvaging morning’s light

Often I bring back paper-clips
And candy wrappers
To stuff my nest

Oddments meant to remind me
Of great unravelings
I soon forget

The rope eludes my hold
My wings still made of wax
Suddenly unfold

And yet I flew
That much I knew
Before I fell
