I start to understand
why they must do this
to the music of the corrida
the matador is St. Michael
the bull is the dragon
the bull is the soul’s
uncontrollable rages
that must be given up
baffled and overcome
by some godlike being’s
dazzling footwork
courage and grace
so they reenact
the old sacrifice
and because we still can’t do it
they have to go on
showing us how.
