they say the treacherous
deceitful yellow-bellied
not mellow really at all
is the calm of a coward
but all the colors have
their darker flowers
the ruddiness of shame
and unmasked power
the buried bruise of doubt
the pale blue-green
of fear gone brackish snot
we are all cowards
until we are not
