behind the poem’s peculiar purpose
which is not to hide the violins
the commonness but in its own
particular ways often hidden as well
invoke that ancient friendship
from which all verses flow
the ode the palindrome the sonnet
old furniture lugged from stanza
to villa to tent to town old loves
which now at last are done
from here on let words be sung
words as merely metaphors for love
