than this doomed earth
at evening when the sun
descending lifts us up
we can have heaven later
with our suppers
after a stroll along the harbor
as the moon leaps over
these were some of our earlier mistakes
and triumphs cemented over
as if they created themselves
as indeed they created this nothing
what the Greeks called beauty
by which they meant the world itself
not just everything in it
