Climber’s Valentine

The Himalayas we could be climbing
Aren’t in Tibet but all around us
If we could have the good sense
To walk through a burning desert
Toward some kind of simple life
Of what are we not capable
Rich bodies are scattered
On the mountain of death
But in the desert the seeds
Of courage unfound and unmattered
Will have been planted
The migration to a real life
For which death is
The down-payment
