Two Way Valentine

Certain members of its species
Grow tall and slim in the sun
Sparse of leaves but with
Pale purple flowers in abundance
While other fellows of its kind
Spread in the shade around
The trunk of a tree alone
Thick with green but only
A few deep violet flowers show
Sometimes on warm afternoons
I feel its two colors must be a form
Of a consciousness of its survival
Whether to bear many and go on
Or settle for a few bright gems
Hoarded up for another time
