Estella's Valentine

I wanted to try to understand
What she couldn't understand
About the longings of her friend
It seemed she had taken her words
Right to the end of reason
Where an abyss opened up
On the other side of which her friend stood
Waving a vision of another world
Was it a failure of imagination
That she felt such despair
How could they be friends again
One locked in intellectual torpor
The other reading things in the air
This seemed the central question of our time
Maybe the only question ever
