This disease Kindness
slow to spread but once
it enters the lungs and
perforates the spine
it builds its den

up behind the spleen
your body’s not going anywhere
but still can’t remain
once it’s all taken away
it just comes right back

hard to sleep for
fear you’ll miss
even one child
screaming in the dark
for you.
