Out for my walk
I stop to wait
For a finch to drink
Some leftover rain
A cautious nervous thing
Is it ever sure it's safe
To bend and lift its head
To take a single drop
Out of the brimming pail
Another and another
Its existence is such a marvel
And yet I'm hurt that we are
Now estranged once friends
And fluttering and helpless must
Insist upon such distance
